Paul Ostby began consulting with Neil Sheehy in January, 2000, in the areas of public relations and as a hockey scout. Paul has had many years of experience in hockey at many different levels and in various capacities, including as a player, a scout and a coach. These varied roles have allowed Paul to develop numerous skills and capabilities, which are proving to be a tremendous asset to the Sheehy Hockey organization.
Paul is a native of Elk River, Minnesota where he excelled as an athlete, earning ten high school letters in hockey, golf and cross country running, and he proudly captained all three sports as a senior. Following graduation, Paul decided against playing college golf, and instead pursued a college hockey career.
Paul walked on at the University of Minnesota, and as a freshman, he sat #6 on the Gopher goaltending depth chart. He continued to perfect his talent as a player and in 1982, as a senior, Paul was named MVP, thus earning him a trip to the National Sports Festival in Indianapolis.
After attending the 1982 New York Ranger's training camp, Paul joined the 1982-83 US National team, where he and Jim Craig shared goaltending responsibilities, and won the IF World Pool B Championship in Tokyo, Japan.
Ostby got his start in coaching with the St.Paul Vulcans of the USHL in 1984. During his three years with the Vulcans, Paul also broadened his experience at the professional level as a scout for the Washington Capitals. Paul's assistant coaching experience in St. Paul readied him for his next coaching position at the University of Minnesota, where he spent eight years as an assistant coach, scout and recruiter.
Further rounding out Paul's varied experience in the sport, for the past eleven years, he and former NHL goaltender, Robb Stauber, have coached goaltenders year-round at different sites throughout the Twin Cities area. Additionally Paul has worked as a goalie consultant/assistant coach at Benilde St.Margaret's for seven years and at various times for both Shattuck St. Mary's and Apple Valley High School.
Ostby's tremendous experience in hockey at all levels and in different capacities enables him to provide clients with knowledgable advice based on personal experience and wisdom. Paul receives great satisfaction in being able to offer young players insight into the game and considers himself a teacher and mentor. Paul's personal drive to excel and his open and friendly nature have proven to be valuable in helping young players undertand what it takes for them to be successful.
It is natural that Paul chose to team up with Sheehy Hockey as Neil Sheehy and his brother Tim share a similar approach to the game, and a similar dedication with an unrelenting work ethic. Paul is a professional who takes his job seriously, but at the same time he thoroughly loves what he does, and has fun doing so, which is a great combination!
Paul is a NHLPA certified agent, and attacks this additional responsibility with the same high level of energy that he approaches all other aspects of his life. Additionally, Paul's experience and commitment to grassroots hockey in Minnesota gives him a tremendous understanding of the link between amateur hockey at all levels and the NHL.
